Four days of hands on learning how to build with 'cob' (clay, sand & straw).
We mixed & built cob walls, arches, doorways & sculptures. We worked on the stone stem walls for the cob to stand on,we plastered & rendered with earth & even learnt how to build simple roof for our creations.
We also got very intimate with lots of different soil samples! Learning the art of soil testing, -too much clay? too silty? Learning how to figure out what & how much needs to be added to make the perfect cob building mix.

So, the upshot is, I'm ready to build! Yep it was that good! There's a few projects on the go here, one is the barn renovation, after building up the walls with cob, we will re mortar the whole barn with an earth mortar mix, then apply an earth plaster. Finally, we are planning to install an earthen floor, the one in Feile & Colin's house is gorgeous, and then...who knows, maybe a mass (cob of course!) rocket stove heater to keep it cosy!
Like the sound of it, Want to come get your hands dirty? Drop me a line & I'll let you know when we're ready to begin!
The other, less ambitious project that we'll probably be starting with is a little meditation hut in the garden, This is needed!! Somewhere to hide out & relax & listen to the rain :-) It's going to be a really simple structure, not entirely enclosed, using only recycled or natural materials from around the farm. Basic stone stem wall, then one or two cob walls where we can have some fun curving & sculpting it into the landscape. We're also planning to do some wattle & daub as part of the walls, maybe some glass bottles for the stained glass effect and a grass roof, -or thatch? maybe....
