I'm co-teaching on it, along with Suzie Cahn of Carraig Dulra and a host of experienced guest tutors. It's a two week immersion and (potentially life changing!) adventure in to using Permaculture in community, nature and design in all contexts. Highly recommended as an invaluable experience for anyone working towards a sustainable land or community based project in town or country! Please have a look at the website for more details about what's involved in the course and how to book places and I'd also appreciate if you would share the poster and link in any other similar interest groups -Thankyou!
The search for ethical underwear is over! Having gotten down to what as an 8 year old I used to call 'fally-down knickers' my commitment to avoiding penney's & other similar stores paid off when I finally came across Emiliana Underwear.
Charity shops generally clothe me quite adequately, which is at least a step in the right direction, but I have to draw the line at second hand underwear!!
There are so many issues around cheap (& sometimes not so cheap) clothing available on the high street, The 'throw away' consumer culture encouraged by such stores & necessitated by the poor quality of the clothing offends me. From a practical Earth Care level where is all this waste ending up? Everything about the supply chain from plant source (fair price for producers, farming methods, chemicals) to working conditions in factories (fair wages, safety conditions), to the discarded products (landfill) is questionable - & as with many long & complicated supply chains, hard to trace & trust in an industry based around pure profit & fickle fashion.
On an inner level, these kind of products gives me a hollow feeling in my stomach, the kind of feeling you get when you know you are taking advantage of somebody else. The kind of feeling that prefers to remain unexamined. Compassion & respect for another human being (& myself) gives me the conviction that I want to support dignified, environmentally sound practices with my purchases.
Anyway this wasn't meant to be a rant, there are alot of problems in this world, here is one simple solution! So important to share information of accessible solutions then we have the choice. And our choices will be noticed, voting with your wallet shouldn't be underrated.
Emiliana's underwear is made by Emma in the UK (Couldn't find anything in Ireland but would love to know if there is any thing similar! - micro business opportunity?) from repurposed, unwanted stretch fabrics. While I only recently received my pairs so I can't vouch for the longevity of them, they appear to be well made, tailored to your personal fit & they're comfy & very pretty! Price wise, they are not as cheap as penneys/primark, but comparable with other high street stores such as Oasis, So quite affordable. I teamed up with a friend to order together & we got a discount on a few pairs plus shared postage.
You can read more about Emma's story, her experiences in the fashion world, get in contact with contact her, order feel good knickers & have a general browse on her website http://emilianaunderwear.com/
